How can it help with recovery?
Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate injured tissues. It is commonly used as part of a rehabilitation program for selected musculoskeletal conditions.
Is It Right for Every Injury?
Not always.
Current evidence suggests that radial shockwave therapy is generally more effective for chronic (long-standing) conditions than acute injuries.
In the early stages of an injury, the body is already going through its natural healing process. During this phase, treatment usually focuses on appropriate loading, movement, and exercise rehabilitation.
For persistent pain that hasn't improved over time, shockwave therapy may be considered as an adjunct to help reduce pain and improve function.
What Conditions May Benefit?
Research supports the use of radial shockwave therapy for selected chronic conditions, including:
- Plantar heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis elbow
- Patellar tendinopathy
- Gluteal tendinopathy
- Shockwave Therapy Is Only One Part of Recovery
Shockwave therapy is not a quick fix.
The best outcomes are achieved when it is combined with an individualised exercise rehabilitation program and appropriate load management.
