What is the difference?

Physiotherapists and exercise physiologists are both allied health professionals who help improve movement,

function and quality of life but their primary roles and focus differ.

Physiotherapists have the skills to assess, diagnose and treat injuries or conditions affecting the body’s movement.

These include treatments such as hands on techniques such as joint mobilisation, massage or dry needling as well

creating a customised treatment plan that includes education and exercise.

Exercise physiologists on the other hand specialise in assessing and managing a client’s condition through exercise.

This includes prescribing and supervising exercise interventions such as cardiovascular training and resistance training to help people manage injuries, chronic health conditions and long term physical goals.

When do we see each professional?

You may benefit from seeing a physiotherapist if you are experiencing:

● Injuries such as muscle strains, sprains or stress fractures

● Neck, back or joint pain related to posture, movement patterns or lifestyle habits

● Reduced mobility or difficulty moving comfortably

● Rehabilitation following surgery

● Managing chronic pain in conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia

Alternatively, you may see an exercise physiologist if you are looking to:

● Manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and arthritis

● Improve strength, fitness, balance, mobility and overall physical function

● Safely return to exercise following injury, illness or surgery

● Manage persistent pain or physical limitations through tailored exercise

● Establish a structured, long term exercise program that is safe and person centred

At Berryfit, our team can support you throughout the recovery journey. Whether you need help managing an injury, improving your movement, building confidence in the gym or managing a long term health condition, we can help you find the right pathway and create a program that supports your goals.
