We often think about exercise in terms of strength, fitness, mobility or pain
But there is another part of exercise that can be just as important:
the people around us.
For many adults, the challenge is not knowing that exercise is beneficial. It is finding a way to keep moving consistently, build confidence and make exercise part of everyday life
This is where community-based exercise can make a difference
We Learn From Each Other
In a group environment, people naturally learn from their peers
You watch how someone approaches a new movement. You hear how they managed a similar challenge. You share experiences, ask questions and pick up small things along the way
This is often described as peer learning or social learning
Seeing someone of a similar age or ability progress can also change how we think about our own capabilities
Instead of “That’s probably not for me,” it can become:
“Maybe I can do that too.”
That confidence matters
At the same time, community exercise does not mean exercising without guidance
At BerryFit, our community-based exercise is supported by allied health professionals and specialised coaches who can help people choose appropriate exercises, modify movements and progress training according to their individual capacity and goals
The community provides the encouragement and shared experience. The professional team provides the guidance.
Social Support Helps Us Keep Showing Up
Starting exercise is one thing
Continuing it over months and years is another
Research into community and group-based exercise suggests that social support, connection with others and the group environment can play an important role in participation and adherence.
Sometimes it is as simple as knowing someone expects to see you at training.
Other times it is encouragement after a difficult session, celebrating someone else's progress, or having people around you who understand what you are working towards.
Exercise becomes more than an appointment in the calendar.
It becomes something you do with other people.
More Than Physical Fitness
The benefits of exercise are not limited to muscles, joints and cardiovascular fitness.
Community-based exercise also creates opportunities for social connection, shared experiences and a sense of belonging.
This can become increasingly valuable as we get older.
Importantly, being part of an active community can also change our expectations around ageing.
Getting older does not automatically mean doing less.
People can continue learning new movements, building strength, improving fitness and taking on new challenges — with appropriate progression for their individual capacity.
The Goal Is Participation
At BerryFit, we see exercise as more than completing a rehabilitation programme.
The bigger goal is helping people develop the capacity, confidence and independence to participate in life.
For one person, that might mean returning to work.
For another, walking comfortably with family, joining a group class, lifting weights, running their first event or trying something they never expected to do.

But the event itself isn’t really the point
What matters is everything that happened around it — people training together, learning from each other, supporting each other and working towards something meaningful
Because sometimes the best thing about exercise isn’t just getting fitter
It’s having people to move forward with
